RCA IGLOO 4.5 Cubic Foot Fridge
With a 4.5 Cubic Foot capacity, the RCA-IGLOO RFR440 has the largest storage area in our Apartment size refrigerator reviews. However, having a large capacity also means the overall size (20.25″W x 21.5″D x 31.5″H) of the product increases accordingly.
The interior of the RFR440 has two tempered glass, easy clean shelves that can be removed and re-positioned into any of the 5 slots. At the top of the Interior compartment is a very small freezer compartment with a drop-down, vented door.
Inside the door are 4 storage areas, 2 horizontal and 2 vertical. Three of these have wire retaining rods to keep food and drink secure, and one has a can dispenser rack.
The main complaint from many customers is regarding the lack of protective packaging, which has caused some of the appliances to suffer damage when being delivered.
If you are looking for a cheap alternative to the full size fridge freezer, the RCA-IGLOO RFR440 could be just what you are looking for. It is an ideal appliance for Dorm rooms, as a bar fridge or in fact any small space.
Available in: Black, Stainless Steel or White.
How to Find the Best Apartment Size Refrigerator for Any Space
If you’ve got limited space, an apartment size refrigerator is a great option.
A fridge is something that you shouldn’t have to live without. Whether you live in an apartment, don’t have a kitchen, or live in a dorm, you should have a way to store your food.
This is where a small fridge can help.
But, there’s a lot to consider before you purchase a small fridge. You need to know what features to examine. Find out what you should look for when shopping for an apartment size refrigerator.
Why Should You Buy an Apartment Size Refrigerator?
The main reason for buying a smaller refrigerator is because of the size.
For example, if you rent a room you might not have your own kitchen. The same is true for college students living in a dorm. Or, if there’s a communal kitchen you might prefer to have a fridge in your bedroom.
Smaller fridges are not just made for apartments and dorm rooms. Though, that is their primary use.
You can also use a smaller fridge to supplement your existing storage space – you may want a spot to put your cold drinks in the garage.
Some people buy these fridges to save electricity. The smaller fridge uses less energy. If you don’t store a lot of food, you might not have the need for a full-size fridge.
Regardless of the reason for wanting a smaller fridge, you should always do your research when buying an appliance. So, the next step is to learn what to look for.
What Should You Look for in an Apartment Size Refrigerator?
When shopping for an apartment size fridge, there are 5 main details to pay attention. This will help you narrow down your options and find a fridge that meets your needs. You’ll want to consider:
- Exterior dimensions
- Interior space
- Energy consumption
- Extra features
- Your budget
Think about which features are most important to you. Decide how you plan on using the fridge and where you intend to place it.
Choosing Small Refrigerators Based on Size
The exterior dimensions list the width, depth, and height of the fridge. If you don’t want your fridge sticking out from the wall, then you’ll want a shallow depth refrigerator. If you plan on placing it beneath a counter, you’ll need a shorter fridge. The average kitchen counter is 36-inches above the floor.
You should think about the purchasing the largest fridge that you can fit inside your kitchen or living space. Small fridges tend to get filled quickly.
Also, the smaller they get, the less efficient they are. So, don’t immediately choose the smallest option. Measure the amount of room that you have available.
Along with the exterior dimensions, you’ll want to look at the interior dimensions. This is typically listed as the amount of cubic space you’ll get inside the fridge.
So, how much space do you need inside a fridge? There are choices between 2 and 6 cubic feet. Though, the average adult will use about 4 to 6 cubic feet of storage in a fridge.
Finding an Energy Efficient Apartment Size Refrigerator
A small refrigerator won’t use as much electricity as a full-size fridge. But, it can still increase your electric bill. With some models, you’ll find the average estimated yearly energy cost.
You can divide the total by 12 to consider the estimated monthly cost. An energy efficient unit shouldn’t cost much more than $2 or $3 per month in electricity. This is much less than a full-size fridge.
Extra Features of the Best Small Fridges
After you consider the size and energy use of the apartment size refrigerator, you should look at extra features and details. This includes:
- Interior lights
- Reversible doors
- Freezer compartments
- Interior configuration
- Wire racks or solid shelves
If you don’t plan on purchasing a lot of frozen food, then a refrigerator without freezer could be a better option. But, if a freezer is essential, then look for units that include the freezer compartment.
Along with freezers, some units come equipped with interior lights. Again, the importance of this particular feature depends on your individual needs. Having an interior light can make it easier to see toward the back of the fridge.
You might also want to match the color and the style of the fridge to your existing décor. For example, if you’ve got a lot of stainless steel appliances, then look for an apartment size refrigerator with a stainless-steel exterior.
The interior configuration should also meet your needs. For example, do you buy a lot of 12-ounce cans? Do you need space for gallon jugs?
Think about the food and drinks that you regularly purchase, the amount of space they take up, and whether they’ll fit in the fridge that you choose.
The interior of the fridge will also likely have wire racks or plastic or glass shelves. Solid shelves are useful when there’s a spill inside the fridge. It keeps the spill from dripping onto the food below.
Pros and Cons of Fridges with Freezers
If you want a fridge with a freezer, you have another detail to consider.
Some units that are equipped with a freezer compartment only have a single door. The freezer compartment is located at the top, with a solid shelf between the freezer compartment and the main fridge.
The drawback to this setup is that the frozen food is exposed to warm air every time that you open your fridge. So, if a freezer is important, you might want to look for a fridge with double doors.
